In this workshop, artist and designer Patti Gibbons will guide participants in creating one-of-a-kind handmade greeting cards for Valentine’s Day to gift to those you love! She will discuss the origin of the Valentine card, archival adhesives and methods of attaching paper, cloth and embellishments, and will introduce watercolor as part of the design. Participants will be using antique and modern papers and embellishments to design cards based upon both traditional and contemporary design.
Inspired by the women of the 19th century who designed handmade Valentines, Patti Gibbons has been designing greeting cards for historic sites, private clients, and local specialty shops for the past 25 years. She incorporates sewing, watercolor, ink, antique, vintage, and specialty papers - to design one-of-a-kind framable works of art.
The participation fee includes 5 high quality greeting cards/envelopes, and materials — a variety antique and specialty papers/books, embellishments, and specialty pens. Several watercolor sets will be available for use if you want to use them in your work.
Though Patti will be bringing lots of materials, participants are encouraged to bring:
- a water container
- brushes for glue (preferably stiff, not soft watercolor brushes)
- watercolors if you want to work with them, and a few fine/small brushes (Patti will be bringing some, but you may wish to use your own brushes and watercolors when painting)
- a few pairs of scissors (Patti uses a large and small pair)
- You are also encouraged to bring your own images and embellishments that you may have at home, such as family photos, vintage papers, art papers, photographs (Patti’s preference is a matte finish) as well as anything special that you are willing to cut up that has meaning to the people you are sending the cards to.
