ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

 

Gail Winbury is a contemporary abstract artist with solo and juried exhibits through out the United States and Europe. She recently completed a two-person exhibit in Germany, 2017. Winbury had 3 solo exhibitions in 2016; at 73 SEE Gallery in Montclair, NJ, a large works exhibit at the Atrium Gallery, Morristown, NJ and a solo show at ETS Headquarters in Princeton.

 

She has had numerous visual arts residencies. In June of 2016, she was awarded and participated in an artist residency in Israel. In 2015 she was a visual-arts fellow in Italy and in 2014, was a painting resident at the School of Visual Arts, Manhattan. She also participated in a master class in 2015, with renowned artist Joan Snyder. While oil painting is her primary medium, of late she is exhibiting drawings and other works on paper.

 

Her work is exhibited in museums, as well as east coast galleries. She has won awards such as the Curator's Choice Award 2 years in a row, and the Curtis Hilliard Memorial Award. 2015.  She was one of 7 artists invited for an exhibit representing the current state of abstraction. Her art is published in a book on Bach's Cello solos, in several art catalogs, including one in Italy with an essay about her work. Her was recently highlighted on the blog, “Painters Talking Painting”.

 

A catalog of Winbury’s recent Montclair exhibit is available on Amazon, edited by Mary Scotti with an essay by international journalist and curator Lilly Wei. She is in the permanent on-line collection of the American Psychological Association. Winbury has been interviewed for numerous publications, radio and television in the USA and Germany. The artist curates exhibitions, gives talks on abstract art, “Women in Abstract Expressionism”, ”Finding your Visual Language”, and mentors other artists. This, prolific, “mid-career artist” makes paintings that are known to be “lyrical, and at times mysterious”, as if answering deep metaphysical questions. Other times, her work is sensuous, exuberant and direct.  Winbury is influence by nature, music, psychology and the history of art. She is in private collections in the United States, Italy and Germany.
