“The mixed media work you see here comprises my dialog with the common place as I search for the extraordinary in the mundane. Everyday elements inspire me and provide an infinite source of raw material for making art. As an abstract painter, each mark or brushstroke is easily triggered by a word, a moment, a found fragment, an impression left behind. I am fascinated by surface quality and translucency, and use them to suggest a sense of intimacy, the depth of human consciousness and the passage of time. I find the process alone fuels my constant need to change and push edges, while offering a somewhat odd sense of order to what often feels like surrounding chaos.”
Roxie Johnson holds an MFA in Illustration from Syracuse University and has worked as a fine artist and educator in the visual arts for 40+ years. Known widely years back for her unique approach to the etching process, her meticulous and metaphorical imagery developed into a layering process that clearly remains prevalent as part of her trademark in the mixed media work she produces today.
Highlights of her career thus far include a summer fellowship at Skidmore college; study with Master Printers in Florence, Italy; NAWA induction; and recognition by the Smithsonian Institute Archives of American Art for greeting card design.
As a Hudson Valley based artist and poet, she has both exhibited and received awards in juried competitions nationally as well as in galleries of the Mid-Hudson and Metropolitan area. Roxie continues to paint, print, and write from her studio in Hyde Park, NY.
