ARTIST STATEMENT

The task of abstraction, for me at least, is the struggle to always avoid form. But form emerges nonetheless. So perhaps it could be the search for ‘formless-form’, a balance between the two. Formlessness is the source, form is simply the expression of the inchoate. Something like that….

Right now it seems that linearity prevails, but the line is moving into color a bit, perhaps I’m “tak(ing) a walk with a line” (Klee) into spaces of color. Moving the line into color seems to take it into the microscopic realm, somehow; whereas the line by itself seems macroscopic.

I’ve tried to draw blind, so then I’m just listening and sensing, finding the perimeter of the page with my fingers instead of my eyes; but even when I’m doing this I’m forming a mental image, instead of just feeling. Perhaps that’s the next step, just to feel the drawing rather than trying to perceive its outcome.
