Patti Gibbons has spent most of her life residing in and being inspired by the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson Valley, a place that has captured both her heart and creative muse. Immersed in the arts from an early age, the backdrop of the historic art colony of Woodstock and the Hudson River School were the foundation of her creative life. She holds an AA degree in Visual Arts, and a BS and MS in Art Education. She worked for 21 years as a art teacher for students with multiple disabilities and youth-at-risk at Ulster County BOCES, then retired 5 years ago to follow her dream as a full time artist, Patti teaches privately out of her Kingston, NY studio. Both a designer and a fine artist, her work has been exhibited regionally and internationally, she designs for private clients, public businesses and historic sites in the Hudson Valley.
Often starting with automatic or blind drawings, Patti synthesizes her love of the landscape, biology, and narrative art into abstract fantasy “mindscapes” which explode with mark making, delight in the play of color, and interpret both seen and unseen worlds. The art exudes energy, light, cause and effect; oceans explode with bits of detritus and creatures, landscapes writhe with energy, cities throb with color and life. Patti often explores the use of flat and metallic color to create complex layered drawings that change with light and the angle of viewing, and seduce the viewer into a subtle dance with the work.
“The studio is a dream world. Once the door is closed the outside world shut out, it is an escape to a place of wonder, exploration, magic, and resolution; a place where one feels most peaceful and complete.”
