Oil, pastel and pencil
8” x 8” / matted and framed in white to 12” x 12”
In my art, I explore color relationships, use of space, texture, and the expressive nature of line. My work is abstract and sometimes evolves into abstracted landscapes. Whether it’s oil painting or pastel drawing, the work often begins with an image or color that has emerged from the subconscious. The process then becomes a conscious exploration of shapes, marks, and materials. In my oil paintings, I generally work with a palette knife on paper and add marks with pencil or other materials. My drawings are mainly pastel and pencil, but may also include charcoal, conté, or ink. Whatever the material, I move between layering removing the medium. Through this additive and reductive process, the composition evolves and the painting or drawing reveals itself, sometimes a far distance from the original image.
