Acrylic on canvas

I never know where I am going when I begin. I am playing with color and line and words as symbols and shapes. My aim as I move through the artwork is to make the surface of the painting active, a surface with which the viewer can interact.
I am interested in how words can bring you to an interior world or block out that world as well. I am influenced by contemporary artists who are using words and language in their paintings and how language works in an artwork. I see an abstract painting as a poem from another realm.
The physical reality of the paint is important. I work in layers and put paint on in thick, multiple layers so the texture of the paint is part of the work.
I love patterns and breaking patterns, discovering new patterns.
I am influenced by Marsden Hartley’s pattern paintings, and also am influenced by the work of Cy Twombley whose movement, patterns and colors and use of language always intrugue me.
I work to find new possibilities and new territories for being and abstraction and painting itself.
