ARTIST BIOGRAPHY  & STATEMENT

Barbara Tepper Levy is originally from the New York City area, and now lives in Saugerties.    Her background is in fashion and costume design, bringing a vibrant color and line dynamic to her work.  Her art is composed of collages, black and white line-art drawings, acrylic painting, jewelry and hand-built sculptural ceramics.  She has taught collage at the Lifelong Learning Center at Bard College, and shows regularly at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum, where she recently won an Honorable Mention for a mixed media piece.  She has shown at the ARTBAR Gallery, in Kingston, New York and at the Lev Shalem Gallery at the Woodstock Jewish Congregation.  She also was chosen to appear at Fall for Art for the second year in a row, where she showed her sculptural ceramics and was on the Saugerties Artists Studio Tour for the  time this August.

My formal education is in fashion and costume design.  I worked as a fashion designer for several boutiques in New York City, and on constructing costumes for Broadway shows such as “Cats,” and for many ballets.  I restarted my art education soon after the birth of my children 17 years ago, with classes in graphite portraiture.  I then moved on to collage, which was a satisfying and fun way to approach my work.  I also took a number of classes in both watercolor and acrylic painting, and have been working on what I call “Structural Ceramics,” sculptural pottery works that are more like beautiful pieces of art.   My work was described as “pieces that have curves that evoke a sense of graceful movement,” in the Northern Dutchess News.  I believe that flowing dynamic in my work is influenced by my years of working in costuming and fashion design.  Right now I’m using that aesthetic to knit unusual and colorful wearable art.  I also am studying silver work, and have been making beautiful mixed metal pieces, with semiprecious stones.
