Please join Emerge Gallery for "A Discussion With Loel Barr" on Sunday, February 25, 2018, from 4-6 PM. This is also a closing reception for the exhibition "Playing In the Dark: A Collection of Work By Loel Barr."

Artist Loel Barr will be interviewed beginning at 4:30 by artist and friend Christie Scheele. Christie has been leading mentoring group meetings that provide support for artists for work and career development for about 12 years, having now worked with over 50 artists. Christie and Loel met at one of these meetings and have been friends ever since.

Christie will be leading a back and forth discussion with Loel Barr and will touch on her career as a professional illustrator, he influences, her techniques and more. The discussion will also include an audience Q&A period. This event has limited seating, so please arrive early.

Loel Barr is a native of Kansas and has travelled extensively. She lived and worked in New Zealand and the Washington, DC area for many years where she established a successful career as a freelance illustrator for such clients as The Washington Post, The Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic, and Time Life Books. She has taught illustration at the college level and was a staff illustrator for USA Today. She moved to the Hudson Valley in 2004.

For the past decade plus, Barr has been creating art for herself. “I’ve finally been set free to draw, paint, collage the stories that find me, out in the world or scrabbling around in my unconscious.” Included in “Loel Barr: Playing In the Dark” are many of her personal drawings from over the years that elevate the ordinary with her strokes of the pencil; new works using a digital brush; ghostly monoprints; collage works with a bit of nostalgia; and a surreal mixed media abstract landscape rich with texture.

"Playing In the Dark" is an exhibition of artwork by Hudson Valley favorite Loel Barr. Works include collage, digital art, drawings, monoprints, paintings and sculpture. Work is available to view and purchase at www.emergegalleryny.com.
