Andrea Geller: The Bath Series

“The bathing experience is a sanctuary. Sound, light, color and motion synthesize to renew the body, mind and spirit. Each stage captures a different state of mind.” – Andrea Geller

Bath VI • Oil on panel • 12" x 12" Bath VII • Oil on panel • 12" x 12"

The exhibit features 26 works by New Jersey artist Andrea Geller. Each piece portrays the stages of an intimate bathing ritual: from preparation, immersion in the bath, to emergence. With much of society currently in isolation and looking inward,The Bath Seriescouldn’t be more timely in offering an intimate look at the personal cleansing ritual that many are experiencing, be it a cleansing of our mind and reconnecting to the simpler things, or a metaphorical cleansing of the clutter in our lives.

Bath XIX • Oil on panel • 12" x 12" Bath XVI • Oil on panel • 12" x 12"

Each piece in the series contains multiple figures in differing degrees of visibility, with some having been painted in and wiped off to represent a narrative in the temporal dimension. The panels are oils on cradled wood and measure 12" by 12". The compositions are designed to function both individually or arranged in groups, allowing a narrative to evolve.

Bath XXVII • Oil on panel • 12" x 12" Bath XXX • Oil on panel • 12" x 12"

Since 2000, Andrea Geller has been studying the figure in motion, often placing the figure both in landscapes and interior space. Color is an important element in her work. Geller is inspired by both the Bay Area Figurative Movement and Expressionism. The artist received a BFA from Parsons School of Design and an MFA from William Paterson University. Andrea Geller is a professor at Bergen Community College and an adjunct professor at William Paterson University, both in NJ.
