Saugerties Village Celebrates National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month

Emerge Gallery and Shout Out Saugerties are pleased to join forces in planning a celebration of National Poetry Month in April throughout the Village of Saugerties. The month will consist of poetry readings, exhibitions, events and other activities designed to engage the community in the written word and discover the rewards of poetry.

Emerge Gallery will be kicking off the celebration with the exhibition Art & Words, opening Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 5 - 8 PM. The exhibition consists of 21 artists and 20 poets creating a new piece of art or poem inspired by one another’s work. The work will be exhibited side by side with the art or poem that was the inspiration for the new piece. A poetry reading for Art & Words is scheduled for April 28, 2018, from 4-6 PM.

Bring your favorite poem about drinking and alcohol to Love Bites Cafe (69 Partition St) on Sunday, April 15 from 3-4:30 PM for Poetry & Potions. All are welcome and encouraged to participate by joining the open mic and reading poems about one of America’s favorite past times — drinking! Sit back, have some cocktails and listen to some wonderful spoken word.

Join us on Sunday, April 22, 2018, 4 PM, at Cross Contemporary Art (99 Partition St) for an hour long reading of a new translation of Homer’s The Odyssey by Emily Wilson — the first translation of the text by a woman. The reading promises to be a dynamic, fast paced version of the classic text. A group of local poets and actors will be reading, including Lora Lee Ecobelli, Lief Grund, Josepha Gutelius, Jon Lee, Ulf Loven, Will Nixon, Guy Reed, Patrick Wadden, Bruce Weber and others.

Finally, take a self guided poetry tour around the Village. Many merchants were matched with a poem that was curated for their business. Visit each shop along the way to read the poetry, stop in to say hello to our merchants and discover all that Saugerties Village has to offer.
