Emerge Gallery is pleased to collaborate with Kevin Barry, Vice President of J.P. Barry Hospitality Inc and independent curator Ellen Martin in bringing the work of artist Peter Bradley to The Oyster Point Gallery in Red Bank, NJ.
"Peter Bradley: Beyond the Fields of Color" will open on September 6, 2019 from 6 – 8 p.m. and run through November 3, 2019. At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2019, Ellen Martin will be conversing with Bradley about his work and life. The exhibition will include new paintings and a visual historical timeline of Peter's illustrious career. Multi-faceted Peter Bradley has had a long and storied career. In 1968, as Associate Director of the prestigious Perls Galleries, he became one of the country’s first black art dealers. In 1971 at 31, Peter curated The De Luxe Show in Houston at the request of John de Menil. The exhibition is widely considered to be the first fully racially integrated art show in the US and changed the way artists of color were represented. In 1972, he had his first of six shows at Andre Emmerich.
Foremost, Peter is an artist – a sculptor and a painter. Over a 50+ year career his paintings have ranged from monochromatic, serene spray paintings to bold, cacophonous pieces replete with textures, fearless color choices, and broad gestures all built on a base of stained raw canvas. He has supported Golden products since their inception and with their use continues to advance the language of color field and abstract art.
Peter’s work is in the permanent collections of a number of museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. In 2017 Bradley completed an Artist in Residence at the Squire Foundation.
With the recent interest in black artists over 70, attention to Peter Bradley’s work and career is timely and significant. He continues to challenge his use of color and texture and paint daily at his home studio in a historic 18th Century stone house in Saugerties, NY.
